Does Coconut Oil Cause Acne?

No. Coconut oil does not cause acne. It actually helps acne instead.

If that's the case, then why are some people saying that coconut oil causes acne?

That's because they got more breakouts on their face after application of coconut oil. But didn't I just say that coconut oil helps acne? So, why does breakout happen?

Some say that the breakout is caused by coconut oil being comedogenic. Unless you use a really poor quality coconut oil like the hydrogenated type or one that is badly processed and it feels sticky on skin, coconut oil does not clog pores easily.

In fact, the breakout has something to do with coconut oil's detoxifying compounds called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). When you rub coconut oil on your skin, because its MCFAs are small in size they can easily penetrate your skin cells, providing a burst of energy to fuel your cells to expel toxins (you're probably unaware that our skin stores toxins).

When these toxins (together with some sebum) get pushed up to the surface of your skin, and you have some dead cells clogging the pores at the same time, tiny bumps of whiteheads will break out on your face.

Coconut oil draws toxins and triggers whiteheads

That's not the worst. If you already got pimples on your face, some of them may grow larger due to the toxins being drawn up and mixed with the clogged mixture. What's even worse is that the breakout may last for a few days up to several weeks, depending on how much toxins you have buried underneath your skin over the years.

The more toxins you have beneath your skin, the more severe the breakout will be.

But the thing is, what people see is the aggravating acne that coconut oil causes, they don't realize what exactly coconut oil does to acne behind the scene and how much toxins their skin has already stored. Which is why the misunderstanding occurs.

For those who know coconut oil's detox reaction, they'll stick to using coconut oil until their acne clears. It's not easy though because like I just said, the breakout can last up to several weeks. Here's a real-life experience I pulled from a forum, just to share with you:

"The same thing happened to me with coconut oil. Started out with immediate improvement and then got terrible acne for about 4 weeks. I stuck with it and my skin is getting better every single day. I think I just had so much crap underneath my skin that it took a long time to purge it out. Now my pores are smaller than they've ever been and for the past 2 weeks I haven't had any new pimples and the ones I had are going away quickly." ~ Maja

However, you can reduce the breakout and shorten its duration by improving your diet and keeping your lifestyle as active and less stressful as possible. This will make it easy for coconut oil to help improve your acne problem since your body will naturally have less toxins to deal with and hence, store less toxins in your skin.

On top of that, be mentally prepared for the breakout and give coconut oil enough time to help cleanse your skin of toxins so that you won't easily freak out when your face breaks out. Freaking out causes stress and upsets your hormonal balance, which can aggravate your condition. So, stay cool and let coconut oil does its job.

Here's another input from the same forum to prove that coconut oil helps acne instead of causing acne:

"FYI. Unrefined, Organic Coconut Oil will not clog your pores. It actually opens them, releases, and cleanses your skin all of the toxins. Some of which has built up for years. Don't take the advice of others, do your own research, and never apply any skin product all over your face before testing on the inside of your elbow area first. While you're typing things into Google, type in "Healing Crisis" to understand why your skin has to get worse before it can get better when using unrefined VCO. It is simply healing, it is detoxifying, it is rejuvenating. But this is the part, as indicated in almost all previous comments, when people get scared and run back to commercial, store-bought products that will conceal, stifle, and continue storing and building up more toxins. I have acne-prone skin, i also suffer from Rosacea, and i, too, got plenty worse before getting to flawless youthful looking skin. But you have to be willing to go to the fire in order to get to the other side." ~ Becky

"Dear Mike, I don't know what I would have done without your help. It's been a week since I completed the basic Acne No More program and my skin is perfect. Not only that... I lost 22 pounds and I look and feel like a new woman.

Prior to your program, I bought hundreds of different face products when I accidentally saw your site. I gave your system a try and within a week all my family and friends noticed a huge change. Two months later, and without spending obscene amounts on all sorts of chemicals and creams, all of the little cysts and bumps under the skin, as well as the evil pimples I once had were gone. Completely!!!

Today, whenever I see people with acne I want to run up and tell them about your system. You have been a true friend all the way and I have no words to express my gratitude. God bless you!"

"For 2 years, I tried to treat my condition using over the counter products, and my skin would just break out in itchy huge and ugly rashes. It took some effort and persistence (your counseling service is priceless by the way), but I finally can admit that I have managed to overcome this affliction for good. I am acne free finally...and in less than 4 weeks into the program! Thank you for making a difference!"

        • Hi Ben, coconut oil may draw toxins (that have been buried in your tissues for years) up to the surface of your skin. In this process, the toxins may push against the blackheads, causing it to be more visible and in some cases, push the blackheads out of the pores, helping to clear blackheads. But results may vary.

          • Okay great, thanks for the response. Also have another question for you, I've been using a facial mask at night consisting of VCO, lemon juice, and raw honey. In the morning I've just been applying the VCO to help control my oil production because I naturally have oily skin. I've just been noticing that around 3-4 hours later my face is still very oily. What exactly is causing this? Should I apply more half way through the day or is there something else I can do? Appreciate the help!

Also as a side note, I have been orally taking the VCO as well to help clean out my system. Thanks!

          • Hi Ben, have you been putting too much coconut oil on your face? Our skin gets saturated easily. A thin layer is good enough.

Also, it takes quite a while (like 2 weeks or more in general) to feel the calming down of oil production.

Another thing is, do you sleep late at night? When it's time to hit the sack but you force your body to stay wide awake, your liver might overwork and go awry. When liver fails to properly function, it won't be able to deactivate androgens timely to help control the secretion of skin oil.

Are you taking meat? Try cutting down on meat since meat "by nature" carries toxins, whether organic or non-organic. Toxins can overload your liver too. Too much sugar intake can cause hormonal imbalance as well.

I suggest that you read up How to Use Coconut Oil for Acne? to learn the way of improving your oily skin so as to avoid potential acne flare.
